About Pachis art studio

The story behind the name, the space, and the woman who created it.

Meet Juliana

Juliana Flores, founder of Pachis art studio

Founder & Creative Director

When I was a toddler, I would garden with my mom in our backyard. She is the creative role model who raised me, and she also happens to have the best green thumb. Somewhere in my toddler language, I started using the word "pachis" when referring to flowers. It's just one of those words kids make up that stays with them forever.

I guess that's where my creative journey began.

I always had a plethora of art supplies around. Stickers, fun pens, notepads in all sizes. I'm so grateful that creativity and artistic expression were always part of my life. I grew up in a house that was constantly being decorated and renovated. A creative mom and a handy dad. Our home was always colorful, full of little trinkets, plants, and flowers. I learned to paint, stain, and texture.

Born in San Diego and raised in Tijuana, my multicultural background enriches our studio's approach to creativity and learning. Being fully bilingual in English and Spanish allows me to create an inclusive space where people from diverse backgrounds can connect and create together.

A Life of Creative Expression

The Purple Scissors

In kindergarten, I was moving to a new school. For my admission interview, my mom took me to the Hello Kitty store, which I absolutely loved for the stationery. Back in the 80s they had the best smelling erasers, pencil boxes, and stickers.

Fun fact: in Tijuana, Mexico, where I grew up, the store was called "Sanrio Surprise" but everyone called it the Hello Kitty store. That day, my mom bought me a pair of purple scissors that came in a plastic cover with a little button and a teddy bear picture. I still own those scissors.

The Sticker Collection

My second memory is from around 4th grade. I had been collecting stickers for what felt like a very long time, carried everywhere in my pink backpack. One afternoon after school, I left my backpack in the laundry room. The room flooded.

When we got home and found it, all my stickers had clumped into one big mushy paper pile. That was the end of the collection. But I started a new collection of pins and erasers soon after.

The Bread Crumb Machine

My school projects always had some creative element. I volunteered to decorate the classroom bulletin board. One time I had to build a machine for a project on the Industrial Revolution, and my mom helped me turn a container of Progresso bread crumbs into a paper dispenser.

Top score, obviously.

Keroppi Letters

In my teenage years, I kept embracing stationery and fun pens. One of my middle school best friends and I would exchange letters on Keroppi stationery. She had the most beautiful handwriting.

It was always a treat to get a little snail mail from a friend, with friendship notes and maybe some gossip too. Thank goodness for the years before social media, right?

Creativity as a Way of Life

As an adult, I continue to embrace creativity and practice creative wellness every single day.

In my adult life I play many roles: business owner, wife, mother, book club member, friend, fellow human. I find myself relying on creativity to process life. Transitions, emotional changes, daily connection with the people I share space with. It's not a hobby. It's how I move through the world.

Why "Pachis"?

Now you know where the name "Pachis art studio" comes from. It's not a person. It's not someone's name.

Pachis means flowers in the toddler language of this woman who runs a business she feels so passionate about. Pachis is flowers that bloom and grow. And flowers in Spanish, my language of origin, translates to "flores." Which happens to be my last name.
